Self-harm in the prison system

چکیده
Self-harm is a much more common pathology within the prison environment than outside of this, so much so that it can be considered specific to it. For 7 years, in the biggest prison hospital in Romania, self-harm was present in 5% of the hospitalized patients, with a total of 762 cases. The mechanisms of self-harm were the ingestion of foreign bodies (63%) and the insertion of foreign bodies in: the soft parts (19%), intracranially (6%), intraabdominally (2%) and intrathoracically (2%). Metal bodies are the most commonly used in self-harm (over 90%). The self-harm technique is learnt from the inmates with a history of such incidents. The mortality is low (0.4%), refusal of treatment is found in 13% of cases, and recurrence of self-harm is common where the ingestion and intracranial insertion of foreign bodies occurs (42% -50%). Mental disorders, dominated by personality disorders, are found in 46% of patients.

Psychosocial Characteristics and Social Networks of Suicidal Prisoners: Towards a Model of Suicidal Behaviour in Detention
Prisoners are at increased risk of suicide. Investigation of both individual and environmental risk factors may assist in developing suicide prevention policies for prisoners and other high-risk populations. We conducted a matched case-control interview study with 60 male prisoners who had made near-lethal suicide attempts in prison (cases) and 60 male prisoners who had not (controls). We compa...
متن کاملSelf-harm in prisons in England and Wales: an epidemiological study of prevalence, risk factors, clustering, and subsequent suicide
BACKGROUND Self-harm and suicide are common in prisoners, yet robust information on the full extent and characteristics of people at risk of self-harm is scant. Furthermore, understanding how frequently self-harm is followed by suicide, and in which prisoners this progression is most likely to happen, is important. We did a case-control study of all prisoners in England and Wales to ascertain t...
متن کاملPrison Officer’s Beliefs Regarding Self-Harm in Prisoners: An Empirical Investigation
The prevention of self-harm and suicide in prisoners depends on good interaction between the individual prisoner and prison staff. The aim of the present study was to determine correctional officers' perception of the causes and functions of self-harm, and the effects of incident severity and...

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ON THIS TOPIC? Suicide rates among prisoners are higher than in the general population. It has also been shown that specific risk factors, such as violent behaviour in prison, psychiatric diagnosis, substance abuse and previous suicide attempts are associated with self-harm in prison. Fifty per cent of prisoners who die by suicide have a history of self-harm and longitudin...
متن کاملPsychosocial influences on prisoner suicide: a case-control study of near-lethal self-harm in women prisoners.
